Vestiphobia? Did you guys know about this term? Apparently, it is a study. Oh well, so I went right ahead and studied it as well and now I would like to share it with you guys.
Wiki – “Vestiphobia” ( latin vestis, meaning clothing) is the fear of clothing. The fear can lead to claustrophobia, fear of no escape, especially when wearing tight garments.
Bizzar right? I was surprised myself thinking how could anyone want to be naked all the time but that’s the thing, the term Vestiphobia is not meant to be taken in a literal sense.
What causes Vestiphobia?
Scientists believe that this phobia can arise from several different places or circumstances, including allergies to certain fabrics or previous experiences with clothing. For example – it is known to be commonly developed among the military people. Because they associate bullet-proof vests, military boots, the print of the uniform with bad experiences.
It can also occur to people who live in society or cultures where a certain kind of clothing is mandatory or they have to follow strict garment rules.
I actually can relate to that. I did not like my school at all and I hated my school uniform. Every time I saw it hanging in my closet, it would suffocate me. Back then I would not have guessed that it is a phobia but now it makes sense.
Come to think of it, wearing the patient’s gown at a hospital could cause vestiphobia. Hospitals are always a bad experience and that green/blue drapy gowns (don’t know what they call it) make it worse.
Symptoms of Vestiphobia
The symptoms seem to be a panic attack and anxiety. This depends on the individual and the severity of their fear. Most common symptoms are shaking, hyperventilating, feeling out of control, breathlessness, dizzy, nauseous etc.
Could there be any cure?
If you ask me, I would have no idea if a phobia like this can be cured but the study says that doctors often prescribe medicines to keep the fear in control and some people even go till the extent of treating it with hypnotherapy.
What do you think? Did you ever experience Vestiphobia?
Let me know.
